Thanks to “stogucheme” for introducing me to this acronym
Oh hey, I just saw this used and thought it was a joke acronym… that’s actually pretty detailed and easy to remember the acronym to. Huh, maybe this would be the all-inclusive acronym everyone has been looking for? I kinda like it, too ^-^
GSM = gender & sexual minorities. It is the best acronym I have yet seen.
I excitedly talk about GSMs while eating a gay BLT and playing my quilt bagpipe. This is getting awesome.
Let’s play a game. Guess which terms the OP doesn’t consider real or equally valid identities/traits?
Whenever I see terms like this with the random-ass hyphenation in the middle of one word, I visualize the writer being all “trans… GENDER? What is this strange new phrasation!? Surely you don’t mean to say this is truly a word! What a bizzare proposition!” It’s really fucking blatant in the way extremely out-of-touch cis people write “trans-gendered”, or cissupremacists who don’t like the word cis will say “cis-gendered”, or as in this i mage, dyadic people will be all “inter-sexed.”
(Exceptions for nonbinary, because unlike all this bullshit, “non-” is a prefix I’ve seen used with hyphenation in any other actual words.)
It seems to me like the bigger problem here is the inclusion of “everyone,” which the acronym completely meaningless. “Everyone” is by definition not a gender and/or sexual minority. Scrap “QUILTBAGPIPE” and say “everyone” if you really mean everyone.
Not everyone is good at spelling and punctuation, and not everyone can read the subtle connotations of hyphens. People are far more likely to use a hyphen if it’s a word they’re unfamiliar with (or if their computer’s spell-check is on). This makes sense: If you look at the history of the spelling of modern English words, many compound words were originally hyphenated. As they become more established in the language, the hyphen is more likely to disappear. Yes, hyphenating “intersexed” is shitty, as it using “intersexed” over “intersex” (and hyphenating “pansexual” and “polyamorous” is incorrect), but getting concerned over hyphens (and don’t get me wrong: I understand concern over hyphens; I’m a copy editor, so obsessing over details is my calling) misses the bigger picture. Which is that there is no point in an acronym that includes everyone. Literally.
Furthermore, I don’t think polyamory is at all comparable to gender and sexual minorities, unless you are making a slippery slope argument against same-sex marriage. Asexuality is problematic, particularly in the way it’s been constructed by ace online activists (see demisexuality; see straight aces appropriating “queer”). And I’m not even sure what “indeterminate” is supposed to be.
Honestly, I can’t see the point in this acronym, because what applications are there for it? Sure, you can make some far-fetched claim for similarity among the groups listed (minus “everyone,” because come on), but their needs and concerns are diverse enough that an umbrella term seems hardly useful — and in fact harmful.
This shit is so ridiculous/meaningless at this point
Please tell me this is a parody
